The Sick Child from 1885–1886 is one of the most well-known, discussed and analysed individual works from Edvard Munch’s oeuvre. The painting was first displayed in 1886 at the State’s third art exhibition, the Autumn Exhibition, under the title of Study. The exhibition took place at the National Gallery and the piece has later become a prized piece in the museum’s collection. Øystein Ustvedt’s essay in the catalogue provides a detailed introduction to the painting and its history with a particular focus on its creation, the motif, its reception, ownership history and later versions. Trond E. Aslaksby’s text is based on extensive technical examinations of the National Museum’s version of the painting with a focus on technique and treatment.
