Kjartan Slettemark tapped into the modern media society early on. He explored the new forms of expression of the time such as happenings and video art and was inspired by the American and European avant-garde. A product of his time, he was anti-rationalist and anti-institutional. At the same time, he lived for and of museums and art institutions. He caused headaches to museum directors and critics alike, but always with a twinkle in his eye.
This retrospective show mounted by the National Museum ranged from Slettemark’s early sketches in his home community, Naustdal, to his final works in Stockholm. In addition to a broad examination of the artist and the man, the catalogue presents how he was received in the Norwegian and Swedish press in the period 1965–2009.
