Furniture

The furniture conservation team is responsible for approximately 3,500 pieces of furniture and wooden artefacts in the museum's collections.
The collections span from the Middle Ages to contemporary design objects, and vary significantly in size, from tiny wooden spoons to entire interiors. The works can comprise a complex and varied combination of materials, such as concrete, papier-mâché and textiles, and are often intricately decorated. As a result, furniture conservation often involves interdisciplinary collaboration.
Treatments aim to preserve the furniture's aesthetics, function and historical significance for future generations. A key focus is preserving the diverse surface techniques as an authentic part of the objects. Through documentation and research, conservators contribute to understanding the historical significance and origin of the objects.
