Narrator:

This is David.
He lived a very long time ago,
but even so, he’s one of the most famous boys who ever lived!

This is his story:
David was the youngest in his family. He was a skinny boy who was just 15 years old.

His country was at war, and his older brothers were out fighting on the battlefield.

David didn’t have big muscles, and he didn’t have any armour or weapons. In fact, the only time he was allowed to go to the battlefield was to take food to his soldier brothers.

No one took much notice of David, he was just a kid.

Then the enemy’s army arrived, and it had a giant called Goliath marching at the very front.

The ground shook every time Goliath took a step!

None of the soldiers dared to take on Goliath, so things weren’t looking good.

Then David picked up his shepherd’s sling.

Voice:

His shepherd’s sling?? His what??

Narrator:

A shepherd’s sling is a kind of leather pouch with a cord at each end. You put something heavy like a stone in the pouch, swing your arm, and fling the stone out of the leather pouch!

Voice:

And it hit Goliath right on the head!

BAM!

Narrator:

EXACTLY!

The giant fell onto the ground so hard that there was a cloud of dust!

David ran over to Goliath, and as quickly as an otter ….

Voice:

An OTTER?

Narrator:

What’s wrong with “otter”?

Voice:

Just sounds a bit strange. What about “mouse”?

Narrator:

As quickly as a MOUSE? That sounds really lame.

Voice:

What about… As quick as LIGHTNING?

Narrator:

Okay!

As quick as lightning, David grabbed Goliath’s sword. And with ONE SWING OF THE SWORD, he cut off the giant’s head.

The war was over. David became his people’s hero, and when he grew up, he became their king.

So that’s the story of David. He wasn’t the strongest or the tallest, but he was just clever and quick enough to conquer the enormous giant Goliath.
