Wax
Would you wear jewellery made from someone’s hair?
Transcription
Wax is a material with a long history and many uses – from organic wax types used in embalming to the simple wax candles that have accompanied people for thousands of years.
Today, we often light candles for ambiance, but wax candles have had – and still have – a central place in rituals, and ceremonies.
In the display cases you’ll find, among other things, small hairworks, made from human hair, that were particularly popular in the 19th century. They also have a history that spans several hundred years.
This type of jewellery was intended to commemorate the deceased and be worn on the body.
How we relate to family and friends who die is changing relatively quickly with new technologies and media.
Could you imagine having a hairwork? Or becoming a hairwork?
