The book Anawana Haloba. I Want to Tell You Something is the first museum publication dedicated to Haloba’s work. Her works invites us to listen in new ways, not just with our ears, but to history, forgotten languages, and to the stories that materials can tell. Her art reminds us to make room for what is disappearing, and to imagine new ways of being that can grow from what is left behind.
In the book that accompanies the exhibition you’ll see a broad spectrum of Halobas muliti-mediainstallations. In several works she investigates oral traditions of Southern Africa, where the voice, language and musical heritage are central. Many of her works address current discussions about war and injustice. Colonial history is a recurring topic in her artistic practice.
The publication contains newly commissioned texts by MoMA curator, Smooth Nzewi; curator of the 2025 Berlin biennale, Zasha Colah; South African curator Bhavisha Panchia; and an essay by senior curator at the National Museum, Andrea Kroksnes.
