The art of painting has a short but eventful history in Norway. The earliest Norwegian artists were central players in the radical political and artistic upheaval known as “det moderne gjennombruddet” – the modern breakthrough. In this book, the author sheds new light on this interesting period in Norwegian history, and shows how themes such as women's issues, class and nation-building were an important part of artistic life.
Through the description of four artists, Johan Christian Claussen Dahl, Catharine Hermine Kølle, Aasta Hansteen and Christian Krohg, the author shows how social conditions have influenced the opportunities to act and express oneself as an artist and intellectual, and how language and the role of the artist back then has shaped art history up until today.
