This catalogue presents the pioneers who were instrumental in establishing the mountains of Norway as an artistic motif – the first people who, in the 19th century, struggled their way to the Vøringsfossen waterfall, the Skagastøl mountain peaks and the Jostedal glacier. Johannes Flintoe, a Dane, was a key figure in mapping this area. Along with geologists, botanists and topographers, he explored his new homeland and documented what he saw in texts and pictures. He later showed his paintings in a number of popular cosmorama exhibitions. Later other artists followed suit: Johan Christian Dahl, Knut Baade, Thomas Fearnley, Hans Gude and others are also represented in the lavishly illustrated catalogue.
