Kjartan Slettemark began to utilise the modern media society at an early stage. He explored new forms of expression such as happenings and video art with inspiration from the American and European avant-garde among others. He was anti-rationalist and anti-institutional, as was typical for the period. At the same time, he lived for and from museums and art institutions. Museum directors and art critics often found him difficult to deal with, but he always had a twinkle in his eye.
The retrospective exhibition at the National Museum included works ranging from Slettemark's early sketches, done in his home village of Naustdal in Norway, to his last works, produced in Stockholm. In addition to a comprehensive presentation of the man and his art, the catalogue examines the reception he met with from the Norwegian and Swedish press from 1965 to 2009.
