This book presents German and Norwegian landscape art from two pivotal artists: Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840) and Johann Christian Dahl (1788–1857). "Alene med naturen. Dahls og Friedrichs landskaper 1810–40" focuses on the years the two painters lived and worked in Dresden. They inspired each other and contributed to the innovation of contemporary visual arts. Dahl was an extrovert with a firm grip on reality; his art was outstanding, and many of his motifs came from Norwegian nature. Friedrich was more introverted; he worked more slowly and was taken by the metaphysical aspects of art and the world in general.
