Dragons and Logs revolves around how ideas about national architecture emerged and developed from the mid-19th century until 1920. Discussions about what was national and why took place all over Europe. In Norway, the Middle Ages were quickly identified as a time of greatness, a period when the nation was strong and independent. Both political and cultural nationalism influenced architectural culture.
This book shows how international the national was in the 19th century, and how “Norwegian style” circulated around the world. In addition, one of the book’s chapters examines the first generation of women architects in Norway, who were more central to the architectural culture of the time than previously known. Hopefully, this is a contribution to destabilizing the masculine aura that architectural historiography has imposed on “domestic style” from the beginning of the 20th century.
