About
- Edvard Munch bestandskatalog
The woman's naked body is depicted against a background of intense red. The contrasting elements and the shallow pictorial space give prominence to the body and skin. The white dress the woman is holding reflects light onto her face, creating subtle paler tones. Pictures like this form a prelude to a major theme in Munch's later work, based on his depictions of the female body and the relationship between the artist and his model. Later, he generally preferred to work with individual female models over a longer period, in some cases many years. The model here may be the same as in Young Woman Washing (The National Museum, NG.M.00843).
Munch painted the picture during his 1896 stay in Paris. No date is marked on the work, but in the list issued by the Hamburg gallery Commeter in 1906, it was ascribed to 1896. In the collection of the Munch Museum, there is a smaller drawing of the scene dated to the same year (The Munch Museum MM.T.00384-verso). Around this time, Munch produced a number of smaller female nudes and studies of models, most as drawings (The Munch Museum MM.T.01081; MM.T.00805; MM.T.00807; MM.T.00852) and one as a painting (The National Museum, NG.M.00843). Parisian Model entered the National Gallery's collection in 1970, as part of Charlotte and Christian Mustad bequest.
