Anawana Haloba. I Want to Tell You Something

The exhibition presents a selection of works from her artistic practice. In addition, she has created a new work—her very own opera— a video insallation with singing sculptures, that draws on rich traditions of folk opera in Zambia.

On four large screens, we see a singing prosession by chiyabilo performers in Zambia, juxtaposed with the artist dancing in Oslo. The sculptures in the room, which chant the artist’s own libretto, are made from traditional instruments and tools used in ceremonial rituals as well as food preparation. The work challenges and transcends conventional Western notions of classical Italian opera.

Haloba’s work invites us to listen in new ways, not just with our ears, but to history, forgotten languages, and to the stories that materials can tell. Her art reminds us to make room for what is disappearing, and to imagine new ways of being that can grow from what is left behind.
