Momentous Mysticism

Around the middle of the 19th century, a new wave of mysticism emerged in Norway.
What distinguished this spiritual movement from earlier religious traditions was its close linkage to science. Could spirituality and science be reconciled?
The 19th century was a period of major upheavals. Industrialization, scientific progress and new social movements transformed people’s view of the world. Modern spiritualism emerged at the intersection of traditional thinking and new ideas. It sought answers to the questions of the day by combining belief in the spiritual with new scientific methods.
The exhibition explores how modern spiritualism found expression in the press, literature and art, and the ideological clashes that raged in the wake of the new wave of mysticism in Norway.
