"Painted Matter" is an exhibition that explores the painted surface.

Decorative painting is a strong tradition in Norway. Painted Matter explores what this means today. Techniques such as wood graining, marbling, and glazing are crafts traditionally used to imitate materials that were otherwise unavailable locally. Today, we are living in an era defined by growing material scarcity and at the same time environmental awareness. These techniques demonstrate how existing materials can be renewed—rather than replaced—through skill, care, and artistic intervention.

Amandine Kastler and Erlend Skjeseth are partners at Kastler Skjeseth Architects, and the couple behind the norwegian entry for next year's Architecture Biennale. starting in May 2027. The exhibition is curated by Joakim Skajaa, Senior Curator at the National Museum.
